Carmelle Beaugelin, BeauFolio Studio, Princeton, New Jersey

BeauFolio Studio is an emerging art house at the intersection of Sacred Art, human-centered design, and restorative equity. Carmelle offers CreatioDivina workshops, creativity consulting, and other opportunities to create art in worship spaces, as well as Lenten and other worship resources and commissioned art. Founder Carmelle Beaugelin is a Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist based in Princeton, NJ. Her creative focus includes human-centered design and expressionist paintings inspired by Afro-Latin Caribbean art styles and sacred themes. She is the Founder and Curating Artist at BeauFolio Studio and earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Carmelle works to create spaces for Black and Brown artists in the church and other Christian spaces; and to allow the artists to fully express the range of their art.

“There are not a lot of Black artists in the Christian space – and we are always expected to focus on our pain… In creating and coming alongside the Divine, we are redeeming our past but we’re also able to envision for ourselves a redemptive future, and a redemptive present as minoritized people. We can create not only art that talks about our pain, but that also champions our prosperity and our ability to view beauty for the sake of beauty -not necessarily creating more trauma porn to share with the world. For me it’s very simple. Justice, at the intersection of faith and art, looks like allowing Black and Brown people to be able to express the goodness of God without always having to make it a hallmark of pain."
